Thank you for your interest in |STAT data manipulation and analysis software.

|STAT has not changed much since 1990-93, so the programs will be familiar.
Maybe the main difference is that the manual entries are available as web pages.
The first |STAT program, desc, is turning 30 this year.

UNIX |STAT for is now (only) available via Web browsers at a secret location.
 	http://www.hcibib.org/stat/xyzzy/

To obtain UNIX |STAT files, please follow the instructions at:
 	http://www.acm.org/perlman/stat/#access
There are installation notes (e.g., for Mac OS X and Linux) at:
 	http://www.acm.org/perlman/stat/installation.txt

DOS |STAT executables and documentation are available as a WinZip file:
 	http://www.acm.org/perlman/stat/DOS-STAT.ZIP

HTML documentation is available from the |STAT home page:

Hi Joel,

Ma nishtana ha-laila ha-zeh mi-kol ha-lelot?

One feature of cataloging is that eons can pass and the work can
be picked up at a later date. I'm planning on releasing GI69-95
in the next day or so (1635 records). Of course, there are no
abstracts or links to papers. If the tables of contents of these
have session names, that might be an easy way to add some terms;
you could scan and send me PDF (OCR not necessary, or even desired).

I don't know what I counted, but I just release 687 records, not 1635.
I did not release GI87 because that was released as CHI87.
This shows all GI records:
 	http://www.hcibib.org/bs.cgi?query=c.gi.*&facetsize=10
and it shows the top authors. Kelly Booth added a dozen
to his entry here:
 	http://www.hcibib.org/authors.html

Gary

PS: Still interested in those session titles.

Let's assume that unless someone pleads for abstracts,
they will not be appearing any time soon.

Hi Joel,

When one is writing one's dissertation, one must say no to non-essential requests.
Non-essential requests are those from people who are not on your committee.
I'm a little concerned that you felt a need to ask, but yes, cataloging can wait.

Best of luck on your writing and defense.

Dear HCI Students,

Summer (apologies to the southern hemisphere) is a good time to
catch up on reading or to broaden your horizons. The HCI Bibliography
has recently been brought up to date with all journals through 2008
and all conferences published to date. The books could use an update,
though, but that still leaves, as of this morning (apologies to those
not in the Americas), 44,727 records of HCI publications.
 	http://hcibib.org/

You can see when items in the HCI Bibliography were published here:
 	http://hcibib.org/pubdates.html
You can see the top authors in HCI here:
 	http://hcibib.org/authors.html
And there are other way to browse.

But there is also search. Some carefully prepared searches are here:
 	http://hcibib.org/canned.html
You can start with these searches or develop your own. If you are
doing work in an area, preparing a search and saving it for future use
might be a good idea. The more intrepid might like the Query Analysis
features under the Options (apologies to usability fans, but in my
defence, the service is not meant for average users).

Thanks, Jared,

While you are in there, maybe you can fix your accessibility problem on every page:

No Label Tag for 'query' in Form 1

<input id="query" name="q" type="text" size="30" maxlength="100" style="padding:1px 3px 0;" />

A typical approach is to have an invisible label, either as a transparent gif with alt-text for the label:
<label for='query'><img src='spacer.gif' height='1' width='1' alt='Search UIE pages:' /></label>
or as something that is not displayed:
<label for='query' style=''display:none;'>Search UIE pages:</label>
and it would not hurt to use the same string as part of the input box's title= attribute:

Also, on your home page:
 	no description
 	no keywords
 	no language specified
I don't think this will bump your pagerank much, if any, but it would not hurt.

And, thanks for the articles. They are often helpful.

Gary

Hi JTG:

Just added CHIstory to the HCI Webliography Humor page.

Fun stuff. I hope you do more.

Did you have to do lots of re-takes because of cracking up?

Hi Jakob,

On http://www.useit.com/alertbox/passwords.html, it's worth noting that masking will not help users who have had their password maintained across screens. View the source on this or any page page with a password field:
 	http://hcibib.org/password.htm

Then, there is the logoff confirmation:
Are you sure you want to log off?
which I suspect is missed by some users, who are left logged in, say to their bank account, until their session times out.

"CobWebs" :-) good term

Gary
