Yes, I think it would be a good idea for you to maintain a WIGS list via the
ACM. Franklin Davis has changed jobs (again) and is not able to provide a
majordomo listserver.

I am glad to see that there is another Mark in the world. While I was at the
SEI I kept track of the frequency of first names. The Mark's were the most
frequent for several years, until we lost a couple and the Bob's took over
first place.

It was good to hear from you. What are you doing in your new job?

Mark

Hi,

My name is Gary Perlman and I am writing you in my capacity
as a former professor at the former Wang Institute of Graduate Studies.
I am also an elected officer in SIGCHI and an on-again-off-again
information director for SIGCHI and for BuckCHI (Central Ohio SIGCHI).
As you may know, WIGS was created as one of the first degree-granting
programs in software engineering, offering a Masters in Software Engineering.
Founded by Dr. An Wang, as a fully-independent, non-profit educational
institution, WIGS was accredited by an official accreditation agency.
In 1987, the Wang Institute closed its SE program, leaving some
200 alumni to create an informal alumni association which has held
dozens of public meetings on software engineering topics in the Boston area.
The WIGS alumni meet at conferences, too.

I am writing you, as SIGSOFT chair, to ask for your support
for a LISTSERV mailing list at ACM, possibly called WIGS@ACM.ORG.
I think it is more appropriate to enlist the support of SIGSOFT
than to create the list through SIGCHI, because WIGS was about SE.
This list would be used to keep WIGS alumni and friends informed of
activities. I would manage the list (I currently own about
50 SIGCHI lists), so there would be no work needed by SIGSOFT.
There would be no archive, so the load on ACM machines would be
minimal (probably less than 10 mailings per year, although traffic
can increase when a well-supported listserv exists).

With your consent, I will create the LISTSERV header to send
to support@acm.org, cc'ing Tom Ostrand, your Infomation Director.

I put in a request for consent from the SIGSOFT chair.
If she says no, then I'll make it as a SIGCHI list,
but I think it belongs more with SIGSOFT.

The best format for me to get the list in is:
	email-address Firstname Lastname .....
where the ..... is any junk you want to be able to search on and display,
such as phone number, company name, home page...
	perlman@acm.org Gary Perlman, OCLC 614-761-5058 www.acm.org/~perlman/
This would allow the list to serve as a searchable directory, of sorts.
So, if Franklin or someone else has extra info, I could format it in,
or accept it in a format like I have above.
We could even maintain entries for missing persons by setting
their options to get no mail. I'm very familiar with LISTSERV.

Are you the holder of th e database, or is Franklin, or...?

Gary

Hi, Mark

I won't be attending ICSE but I'm glad to see that you are maintaining the
mailing list. Please add my e-mail address to the list.

Bo Sanden forwarded a copy to me - he is now working for me here at Colorado
Tech - this is the third time I've hired him (Wang Institute, George Mason
U, and Colorado Tech).

Hope all is well. Give my regards to Cheryl, kids, and David and Joanne.

-- Dick

P.S. For those who don't know, I'm the Dean of Computer Science at Colorado
Technical University in Colorado Springs - I got tired of airplanes and
hotel rooms after five years of running my own consulting company.

Correction: my best email at the moment is

Website and current business description is

That's my update, except for the fact that I'm now helping raise 1 niece =

Tom,
If there are no objections from ACM, I don't have a problem with Gary
Perlman's request. Of course, sometime in the future if it does become
problematic, we might have to reconsider the decision. Until then, I think it is
a reasonable place to put this list server.

Dear Lori,

Please create a LISTSERV list called WIGS@acm.org.
This list is being created under SIGSOFT, for which I
have appended documentation.

Please make the list password: AnWang

The header is appended.

Documentation of SIGSOFT and ACM Support for the Request Follows

THE ORIGINAL REQUEST: From Gary Perlman to
SIGSOFT Chair (Lori Clarke) and Information Director (Tom Ostrand).

	From perlman Thu May 15 15:19:15 1997
	Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 15:19:07 -0400
	From: Gary PERLMAN <perlman>
	Message-Id: <9705151919.AA04245@turing.acm.org>
	To: clarke@cs.umass.edu
	Subject: mailing list request
	Cc: infodir_sigsoft@acm.org, perlman

	Tom,
If there are no objections from ACM, I don't have a problem with Gary
Perlman's request. Of course, sometime in the future if it does become
problematic, we might have to reconsider the decision. Until then, I think it is

Good news. SIGSOFT and ACM have agreed to the listserv list WIGS@acm.org.
When the list is created this week or next, I'll send out a message
to everyone.

Thanks for your reply. A few modifications to my record. 1) Janice in
history - we've been divorced for a couple of years - no new Mrs. Fairley
(yet). 2) my work phone is (719) 590-6716; 3) home phone is (719)
687-8753; 4) work address is 4435 N. Chestnut Street, Colorado Springs, CO

Bo Sanden's e-mail is either sanden@usa.net or bsanden@usa.net - I forget
which. You might send a test message to check it out.
Keep in touch.

P.S. do you have any idea why about 20 of the addressees on Mark Ardis' CC

Greetings Dr. Ardis!

Dan Ligett has informed me that you are the keeper of an email-address list for
Wang Institute Alumni. I would appreciate being added to that list.

For the past 5 1/2 years I have been working at Hibbitt, Karlsson, & Sorensen,
authors of the ABAQUS series of products. This software uses the finite element
method to support engineering (primarily mechanical) analysis in a wide variety
of applications. I am the Product Manager of the post-analysis graphical
display product.

I look forward to renewing my contact with other alumni. Thanks for your
assistance.

She's at Number 9 Technology... www.nine.com. Try postmaster@nine.com?

The last snail-mailing to SSE was quite a while ago, but many of the home
addresses would work, so another step to take is to mail a newsletter issue (or
postcard?) to everyone asking them to register with you. If you do so, I
learned a trick: put "forwarding and address correction requested" under your
return address, and you'll get a card back if there's a forward, and they'll
get your letter forwarded. Only catch--the PO charges you about 35 cents per
correction they return to you.

Thanks for doing this!

Gary,

I have definite news on one person, and additional information about
another three.

  1. Gordon Bell- Gordon now works in the Bay Area Research Center, part
of Micrsoft Research. His email address is gbell@microsoft.com.

  2. Sharon Malek left Sequent to work for Informix in Portland. She
left informix earlier this year to join Gary Kelly in a new Oracle
database group also in Portland. I do not have an email address for
her, but her phone number at home, as of earlier this year, was
(503)645-4760

  3. Vic Vyssotsky retired from being Digital's lab director for the
Cambridge Research Lab (he was my boss) in late 1992. As of 1994, his
home phone in New Jersey was 908-654-0789.

  4. Billy Claybrook communicated with me off and on while I was at
Digital (in CRL). In 1992, he published a book on transaction
processing. He lists his position in that book as Director, Software
Development, at Boston Technology in Wakefield, Ma.

Hope this helps, and thanks for undertaking this task.

Dave

Welcome to WIGS-L@acm.org, the ACM SIGSOFT sponsored mailing list
for the Society for Software Engineering (SSE), created by graduates,
faculty and advisors of the Wang Institute of Graduate Studies.

Update on the Update to the List
--------------------------------
After updating records and getting help from dozens of people,
we now have 116 validated addresses on the emailing list.
Over half of these have updated their contact information.
We even have > 20 web pages, which you can browse from (shhh..):
        http://www.acm.org/~perlman/wigs.htm
I am not sure how I'll make the database available to you;
I could mail it out to the list (60K), make it a secret link:
        http://www.acm.org/~perlman/wigs.db
or blow a bunch of time setting up a password-protected search.
I do not want to place any of the information in a place
where it will result in us getting any more spam. Suggestions?

Now It's Your Turn
------------------
About a month ago, I suggested that people defer posting
to the list until the list was updated (now done), and I
suggested that we devote part of the posts to answering a pre-defined
set of questions (e.g., what has your WIGS experience meant
to you?). Mark Ardis (maa@BELL-LABS.COM) has volunteered
to gather postings, so I left it to him to suggest the questions.
They are:
 1. What WIGS experience has been the most memorable over the years?
 2. Have you kept in touch with any of the friends you made at WIGS?
    If so, who and how?
 3. How would you like to stay in touch with the WIGS community
    in the future?
You can send your responses to the list, or to Mark to get into
the compilation. Note the instructions below.

Gary,

I don't believe I'm seeing anything from the list. It looks like I'm
hearing from your personal ID at ACM. The message is below so you can see
the header.

I sent the review message separately and copied to you.

Ray

It looks like you got the message from me.
That was the last one sent to the list.
I just reviewed the list with no problem.
Try again, and cc me on the message.

I'm baffled.

Try this:
	mail to listserv@oclc.org
with the body
	lists
You should get a list of lists at oclc.
If you get nothing, then there may be something
odd about mail handling between your server and listserv.
What version of CIM are you using, just out of interest?

Gary,

I'll try that. I'm not using CIM. I'm using CISCOMM.

Dear WIGS Colleagues,

I need a rapid immersion into the world of software Quality Assurance. Can
anyone
comment on the value/credibility of the upcoming 21st Annual International
Conference on Software Quality Assurance (to be held in October in Orlando)?
Can anyone recommend specific texts on Quality Assurance?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Hi Gary, long time.

Mike Taylor and I are organizing a WIGS reunion dinner in May. I'm putting
up a web page with directions etc. I want to include a note encouraging
people to set themselves up with the WIGS list.

I'm afraid I'm very naive about these lists (I'm on exactly one), so I have
a question: should I tell people to send you an e-mail at perlman@acm.org --
or is there an automatic way for them to subscribe?

By the way, thanks for keeping the list together, that's a good thing.

Hope to see you in May!

Dan
